The History of Sarvodaya Vidyalaya

A PARABLE OF EMINENCE

Sarvodaya Vidyalaya was founded under the vision of His Grace Most Rev. Benedict Mar Gregorios, the late Metropolitan Archbishop of Trivandrum. The school is one of the earliest institution to be built in the sprawling campus of Mar Ivanios Vidya Nagar and since then, it has become a cornerstone that has witnessed the rise of a plethora of educational institutions around its lofty ground. Standing high in its experience close to five decades, the institution harnesses an indelible aura of sanctity and warmth that makes an ambience of security for everyone in its shelter.

His Grace Most Rev. Dr. Benedict Mar Gregorios

His Grace Most Rev. Benedict Mar Gregorios, the late Metropolitan Archbishop of Trivandrum founded Sarvodaya Vidyalaya on 3rd January, 1973. The erudite scholar pioneered an age of renaissance in the field of education and Sarvodaya Vidyalaya is a true testament of his ideals in educational reforms. He exemplified education as the blending of the salient features of idealism and pragmatism in reconciliation with nature. He upheld the dictum that “Love is my Light” and the institution is the visible embodiment of this wisdom. His conviction that education is the investment in human resource development prompted him to establish the school.

Servant of God Archbishop Mar Ivanios

Servant of God Archbishop Mar Ivanios was born on 21 September 1882.The saga of Servant of God Archbishop Mar Ivanios unfolds a history steeped in social reformation, education and progress. He maintained an ecclesial view of life and he was the first Post-graduate in Arts among the Syrian priests of Kerala. He also served as the Principal of the M.D. Seminary High School and as Professor at Serampore University College, Kolkata. Mar Ivanios was declared the “Servant of God” on 14 July 2007. He established the pioneer educational institution Mar Ivanios College and the monticle of Bethany has been named Mar Ivanios Vidya Nagar in his tribute. Mar Ivanios envisioned a community that embraced equality devoid of any discrimination and he used education as the instrument to bring the disenfranchised to the mainstream society. Every institution in the 130 acres of Mar Ivanios Vidya Nagar is anchored on this vision and works in unison under the patronage of the Major Archdiocese of Trivandrum. The campus is embellished with more than fifteen educational institutions along with Sarvodaya and has become a solitary example of inclusivity and diversity.

The campus of Mar Ivanios Vidya Nagar is sanctified by the sublime presence of our patron His Beatitude Moran Mor Baselios Cardinal Cleemis Catholicos, the Major Archbishop Catholicos of Trivandrum. “A suave and simplistic persona with a soul that emanates grace” would be a worthy and befitting attribute of his personality. His spiritual vision transcends the myopic understanding of the world and he epitomizes a Christian humanism that all are equal in the eyes of the God. He has the vivid conviction that fathomless faith presupposes the material well-being and has alluded everything in his life as part of the loving plan of God. He is deeply concerned about the pains and sorrows of his fellow human beings and does yeoman service in his attempt to alleviate their sufferings. God has gifted him with an exceptional memory power which enables him to remember people and events with utmost clarity. His impeccable demeanor and charismatic personality blended with a fine sense of humour can enrich everyone around him even in the direst situations. The reformative paradigm envisioned by him is developed, nourished and perpetuated by every institution in Mar Ivanios Vidya Nagar. His divine spirit reinstates our obligation to respect and render useful service to the community and become efficacious human beings.
